How to reset Windows password

Incidentally if you forget your password then it becomes difficult to recover and require special tools and skills. However the built in system administrator account can be a great tool to reset a forgotten Windows password.

If you use a Microsoft account of any form to login to your computer, you can use the Microsoft Account Password Reset page to make your identity and reset your password. You will have to give your phone no. or alternate email address to verify your ownership.

This will not work if your computer is offline. You can change the password on the website         but the computer won’t know the new password therefore you will have to use your old password to login. If you don’t know your old password then proceed further to see how to force reset the password.

If that doesn’t work then any administrator level user can reset other user’s password on the computer. If you have another admin level user on the computer then you need to login to the account, go to the control panel to reset the forgotten account password.

If there are no administrator account on your computer, then you can boot to safe mode to access the built in Administrator account. From here you can force reset your account password. Press F8 to access the Safe mode while you start your computer.

  1. To get safe mode on Windows 8 start from the login window. Click the power Option icon, then hold the Shift key while you click on the Restart option.
  2. On first screen that appears select Trouble shoot then after select Advanced options. Finally go to Start up settings and click the Restart button.
  3. After getting the next screen, press no. 4 key to choose safe mode.

Now you are in safe mode you can now use the built in back up Administrator account to get necessary recovery.

  1. On the login screen click the arrow icon and select Administrator account.
  2. After getting the safe mode press +X to open Control Panel/User Accounts.
  3. Select Manager another account and choose the account you want to change to an Administrator account. You can also use the Change password option to reset the other account password.

After that restart the computer.

If this is not available, it signifies that the administrator account has been deleted or disabled. If there is no other admin-level user present then there in no way to reset the password without specialized skills and tool and then you require a professional service.

You can also reset your computer to factory settings. Manufacturers like dell or HP have their own reset    software and Windows 8 has also this built in system. Use the same steps shown above to access the recovery menu select Troubleshooting/Advanced option and then PC Reset to begin. If this is absent than you can also boot from your Windows install disc/USB and reinstall Windows freshly.
