Here are the some useful steps to follow for Outlook, Thunderbird etc in order to solve this. This is especially likely to happen when touring and connecting through a different ISP from usual, because the ISP may hurdle outgoing ports as a protection against their connections being utilized to send spam. Guidelines for altering the port (and sometimes which port to utilized) may differ depending on the accurate category of the email program you are utilizing, but the following covers most of the ordinary ones. Other reasons for not being able to send include a disable recipient address: it’s customarily worth recording any error message you observe on screen, however mysterious.

Thunderbird
The normal symptom is that Thunderbird will attempt to send for about 20 secs before giving up with “Sending of message is unsuccessful. The message could not be sent mainly because of the connection to SMTP server smtp.gn.apc.org timed out.”

Click on Account Settings (normally on the Tools menu)

Right down the bottom of the catalogue of accounts on the left, should be “Outgoing server (SMTP)”. Click that.

On the top right of the Account settings conversation box you should see one or more extrovert servers. You possibly want the default, which might state ‘gn.apc.org’. Click that and proceed to ‘Edit’ option.

Server title should be gn.apc.org. If the server title does notend with gn.apc.org or greennet.org.uk, then certainly you aren’t sending out through. Make sure that “Use name and password” is ticked; the username is mainly the bit before the @ sign in your email address, or the username you utilize. The first time you send, Thunderbird may question you for your password.

If the port number listed is “25”, attempt altering it to “2525” and you can try “none” for “connection security” while you attempt to get it working (security is optional on 2525). Click “OK” and try sending again.

If that doesn’t implement, you might also want to try port 587, which needs STARTTLS security. In reality this is the selected option for security reasons.

Outlook Express and Windows Mail

Proceed to Account Settings (Tools > Accounts)

Click on the “Mail” tab

Highlight your email account, and then click on “Properties”

On the “Servers” tab, examine that you are utilizing SMTP server. Outgoing mail (SMTP) should read “smtp.gn.apc.org”

Make sure there is a tick in “My server needed authentication” (the “Settings” should be “similar settings as incoming”).

Next, click on the Advanced tab, under ‘Server Port Numbers’ ALTER the Outgoing mail server port from 25 to 2525 (or conversely, trusting on which one you have there already. You could also attempt 465 with encryption)

Save your changes and attempt sending mail again.

Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013

Proceed to Tools menu > Account settings

Choose the relevant email account, and click the “Change” button (third from the left above that line)

Make assure that the “Outgoing mail server (SMTP)” box reads “smtp.gn.apc.org” if this is an account. (If you have “smtp.greennet.org.uk” it is value changing to “smtp.gn.apc.org”.)

Click the “More settings” button appeared to the bottom right.

Click the second tab along, “Outgoing server” and secure “My outgoing server (SMTP) that needed authentication” is ticked. Choose “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”. “Needed secure password authentication” should notbe marked.

Click the right-hand tab, as stated “Advanced”.

For “Outgoing server (SMTP)”, erases “25” if that is what you have, and first attempt entering 587. In this instance change “Utilize the following kind of encrypted connection” to TLS. Click “OK” and next.

Discard any messages being sent, and attempt sending again.

If you still faces an error, you may want to attempt using “2525” “Outgoing server (SMTP)” without any encryption (not secure), or hopefully “465” withSSL encryption (secure).

Outlook 2003
Elderly releases of Outlook 2003 utilizes port 465 for a safe connection, and won’t do port 587.
